The True Vine, 2026

John 15:1–17 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. This is my command: Love each other."

Jesus describes Himself as the true vine; He is the ultimate, genuine source of spiritual life and nourishment. God the Father is our gardener, and we are His branches, His friends that He tenderly chose and appointed. Jesus calls us to remain in Him and His love, and allow His words to remain in us. We cannot grow or live on our own. We must stay fully connected to the main vine through prayer, worship, abiding in His word, obedience and fellowship with Him to thrive. We must continually be in relationship with Him, that He is our ultimate source above all things. When we stay connected to Him, our lives will naturally start growing the fruits of the Spirit that glorify God. Just as a plant's branches get water and nutrients from the main stem, Jesus is our living water, watering our Spirits with strength and comfort. God the Father, our caregiver, removes and cuts back branches, pruning fruits so that we produce better fruits and transform us to become even more fruitful. 

Are we truly remaining in Jesus, or are we trying to live and grow through our own strength? 

We should stay intentionally connected to Christ and be nourished by His presence every day by:

• Spending consistent time in God's Word
• Praying and bringing our needs and desires before Him
• Listening to His voice and obeying His commands
• Depending on Him rather than relying on ourselves
• Allowing God to prune attitudes, habits, relationships, and priorities that are preventing spiritual growth
• Remaining in His love even when circumstances are difficult
• Loving others sacrificially and intentionally 
• Looking for opportunities that God calls us to glorify Him in

When God reveals something in our lives that needs to be removed, we must not resist His pruning. We can trust that the Father knows what needs to be cut away for it to become more fruitful, and trust in His ways that we do not always understand or comprehend (Proverbs 3:5-7). His ways are higher than our ways and much greater than anything that we could do by our own ability (Isaiah 55:8-9). We must trust that even in the pain, the hurt and the uncertainty within the wilderness, God's hand is in it, and if we remain close to Him, He will be ahead of us and guide us and will never forsake us. We do not have to be discouraged or afraid (Deuteronomy 31:8).

We will bear fruit when we remain in Christ. Our relationship with Jesus should affect our manner of speaking, behaving, forgiving, serving, loving and responding to others. We cannot produce any lasting spiritual fruit apart from Jesus. Our responsibility is to remain in Him. He produces the fruit we need to sustain our lives. 

1 John 2:5-6 "But if anyone obeys His Word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in Him: Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus did"

Our obedience to God through how we live and obey His will through a willingness to follow His Word, is a sign of our genuine love for God. We must allow Jesus' humility, compassion, purity, forgiveness, service, and obedience to shape our own lives, and our direction must be increasingly towards Him. 

We should ask ourselves if our lives reflect the Jesus we say we follow. 

We should be obedient as a response to the love Jesus has already shown us through His sacrifice on the cross, rather than simply agreeing with God's Word. 

• If Jesus calls us to forgive, we must release resentment
• If Jesus calls us to love, we must intentionally show kindness to others
• If Jesus calls us to serve, we must put other's needs before our own
• If Jesus calls us to speak truth, we must choose honesty even when it is uncomfortable

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being our faithful and loving Father and thank You for giving us Jesus, the true vine. Thank You that You have chosen us, called us, and invited us to remain in You. We recognise that apart from Jesus, we can do nothing. We cannot produce lasting fruit through our own strength, wisdom or ability. Rather You are our source of life, strength, nourishment, peace and everything we need. 

Lord Jesus, help us to remain deeply connected to You every day. Teach us to abide in Your presence through prayer, worship, Your Word, obedience, and fellowship with You. Let Your words remain in us and transform our hearts, minds, our attitudes, and our desires. May we never become so busy or distracted that we begin trying to live apart from You. 

Father, we surrender ourselves to Your pruning. When You reveal attitudes, habits, relationships, priorities, or desires that are preventing us from growing, give us the humility and courage to let them go. Help us not to resist the things You are removing from our lives in the present moment. Even when Your pruning is painful, help us trust that Your hands are loving and that You are preparing us to become more fruitful in order to further Your kingdom in a manner that pleases You. 

When we walk through seasons of uncertainty, pain, waiting, or wilderness, remind us that You have not abandoned us. Help us trust You when we cannot understand what You are doing. Teach us to trust You with all of our hearts and not depend on our own understanding. Go before us, guide our steps, strengthen us, and remind us that we do not need to be afraid because You are with us.

Lord, produce lasting fruit in our lives. Let our relationship with You be evident in the way we speak, behave, forgive, serve, love, and respond to others. Produce in us the fruit of Your Spirit and make our lives bring glory to You. 

Father, help us to understand the connection between loving You and obeying Your Word. As 1 John teaches us, may our obedience to You demonstrate the genuineness of our love for You. We do not simply want to be hearers of Your Word and agree with it, but we want to live it and be doers of Your Word (James 1:22-25). Let your love flow through us as Your Word remains in us and let Your Spirit produce fruit through us. May our obedience be a response to the immeasurable love You have already shown us through Jesus and His sacrifice on the cross. We surrender our lives to You. Prune what needs to be pruned. Strengthen what needs strengthening and make us more like Jesus. 

Help us remain in the True Vine, bear fruit that lasts, love one another as Christ loved us, and live each day in a way that brings glory to Your name.
